Signpost systems can be used for positioning of vehicles as they pass roadside beacons. Vehicles and beacons use Dedicated Short Range Communication and when a vehicle passes a signpost, it receives encoded locational identifier information from the signpost. Positioning using signpost systems relies on a sufficient number of signposts located along the roads. As deploying the required infrastructure for widespread areas is very expensive, signposts are primarily used if other positioning methods cannot be used or if the accuracy is insufficient, e.g. in covered areas and roadways.
